PC Industry Faces Overcapacity – Breakthrough via High-End Focus
China’s polycarbonate (PC) sector is grappling with massive new capacity and low-end product oversupply, pressuring profits. Low-end PC products are now facing near-zero margins, forcing producers to seek a way out . The mainstream strategy is to pivot toward differentiated, high-end applications. Industry analysis indicates that by 2025, profits in commodity-grade PC could dwindle to almost nothing, whereas high-end segments – for example, automotive-grade PC – remain lucrative growth areas. Major PC manufacturers are investing in R&D for specialized, higher-performance grades to escape the cut-throat competition of the low-end market. In the “big capacity” era, breaking the impasse will require innovation and moving up the value chain. Experts suggest that focusing on high-end products and niche applications is the key for the PC industry to break through under the weight of overcapacity and achieve sustainable growth.
