Renewed Safety and Efficacy Evaluation of Sodium and Potassium Ferrocyanide as Feed Additives for Animal Species

The FEEDAP Panel has issued a renewed assessment on the safety and efficacy of sodium ferrocyanide and potassium ferrocyanide when utilized as technological feed additives for all animal species. In their previous stance, the Panel affirmed the safety of these additives when added to sodium chloride at a maximum level of 80 mg ferrocyanide anions (anhydrous)/kg for specific species including turkeys for fattening, laying hens, other laying/breeding birds, all porcine species, all ruminant species, rabbits, horses, salmonids, minor fin fish, dogs, and cats.

However, an inconclusive stance was taken regarding the safety for chickens for fattening and other poultry species for fattening or reared for laying/breeding, as well as for unlisted species/categories.
In the current evaluation, the applicant has proposed a reduced maximum content of 60 mg ferrocyanide anions (anhydrous)/kg sodium chloride for chickens for fattening, other poultry species (excluding turkeys) for fattening or reared for laying/breeding, and for all other species/categories not previously mentioned.

The Panel has concluded that sodium ferrocyanide and potassium ferrocyanide remain safe at a maximum of 80 mg ferrocyanide anions (anhydrous)/kg sodium chloride for turkeys for fattening and breeding, laying hens, all porcine species, all ruminant species, rabbits, equines, salmonids, minor fin fish, dogs, and cats. Furthermore, they have determined that a maximum content of 60 mg ferrocyanide anions (anhydrous)/kg sodium chloride is also safe for chickens for fattening and minor poultry species for fattening or reared for breeding, as well as for all other animal species.
