α-Amylase Produced By Bacillus Licheniformis DSM 34315 Was Evaluated As a Poultry Feed Additive In The EU

ECHEMI 2024-07-16

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued a scientific assessment opinion on the safety and effectiveness of α-amylase (trade name Ronozyme® HiStarch CT/L) produced by Bacillus licheniformis DSM 34315 as a feed additive for fattened chickens, fattened turkeys and small growing poultry species.

After assessment, the Panel concluded that the α-amylase additive is safe for these poultry species when added to feed at an amount of 80 KNU/ kg of full-value feed. However, due to a lack of relevant data, the panel was unable to draw conclusions about the efficacy of the additive.

The panel noted that the production strain and its DNA were not detected in the composition of the additive, indicating that the final product does not pose a safety risk. At the same time, the additive has no irritation to the skin, the solid type has no irritation to the eyes, but the liquid type has no conclusion on the irritation to the eyes. Due to the protein nature of the additive, inhalation may cause respiratory allergic reactions, and related exposure should be prevented.

α-amylase produced by Bacillus licheniformis DSM 34315 is safe as a poultry feed additive at the recommended dosage of 80 KNU/ kg of full value feed, but its efficacy still needs to be confirmed by further studies. This conclusion will provide a scientific basis for the relevant management decisions of the EU.
