WHO Warns of High Risk of Polio Virus Spreading Across Gaza, Assessment Underway

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning that the Gaza Strip now faces a serious threat of large-scale transmission of the polio virus. The warning follows an in-depth analysis of the local public health situation, and WHO is currently conducting a comprehensive assessment and study of the issue.

According to the WHO, a number of suspected polio cases have recently been reported in the Gaza Strip, which is of great concern to global health experts. Polio, also known as poliomyelitis, is a highly contagious viral disease that, once it breaks out in a community, can spread rapidly, posing a deadly threat to unvaccinated children. Based on historical data, the virus can cause permanent paralysis and even, in the most severe cases, death.

In response to this crisis, WHO is working closely with the health authorities in the Gaza Strip to assess the severity of the outbreak and urgently develop a response strategy. A team of international experts is conducting in-depth research to determine how best to stop the spread of the virus within high-risk areas. This includes strengthening surveillance systems to ensure timely detection and isolation of cases, and expanding vaccination coverage, especially among children.

At the same time, WHO has issued an urgent appeal to the international community to provide the necessary financial and technical support to strengthen the vaccination programme and public health infrastructure in the Gaza Strip. WHO stressed that only through global solidarity and sustained efforts can effectively stop the spread of polio and protect the health and safety of the region, especially children.

This warning once again highlights the importance of global public health security and the need for collective action in responding to infectious disease threats. In 2019, the number of polio cases worldwide rebounded to 122, indicating that we still face significant challenges in achieving the goal of global polio elimination. Therefore, the international community must be vigilant and work together to increase global vaccination coverage to prevent the recurrence of this preventable disease.
