EU Publishes Peer Review of Pesticide Risk Assessment for Active Substance Mepiquat
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has announced an in-depth peer review of the pesticide risk assessment of the active substance mepiquat on July 24, 2024. This review is not only a comprehensive consideration of the safety of the active substance, but also an important reflection of the rigor of the EU pesticide regulatory system.
Arthrothylamine, as a plant growth regulator, plays an important role in agricultural production. It can regulate plant growth and development, thereby improving crop yield and quality. However, with the development of modern agriculture, the use of pesticides has become increasingly prominent, and its safety and impact on the environment have become the focus of public concern.
In this peer review, the European Food Safety Authority conducted a detailed evaluation of the representative use of arthrochlorides as plant growth regulators in cereals and grass crops. By comparing and analyzing a large number of experimental data, field investigation results and relevant regulations and standards at home and abroad, they reached a preliminary conclusion on the safety of knotylamine.
It is worth mentioning that this review also received the active participation and support of the main reporting member State of Finland and the deputy reporting member State of Estonia. Experts from the two countries conducted a comprehensive risk assessment on the toxicity, residue, environmental behavior and so on, and put forward many valuable opinions and suggestions. These opinions and suggestions not only help improve the EU's pesticide regulatory system, but also provide useful references for other countries.
Following a peer review, EFSA proposed reliable endpoints that could be used for regulatory risk assessment and listed missing information on the requirements of the regulatory framework. This means that in the future regulatory process for this active substance, the EU will pay more attention to the accuracy and completeness of data to ensure public health and environmental safety.
In addition, the review identified a number of areas requiring special attention. For example, the use effect of arthropyl amine in specific crops and climatic conditions, its impact on non-target organisms, etc. These issues are the focus of future research and regulation.
The results of this assessment have important implications for pesticide regulation in the EU and globally. It not only provides an important basis for the EU to formulate a more scientific and reasonable pesticide regulatory policy, but also provides a useful reference for other countries. At the same time, it also reminds us that while pursuing high yield and efficiency in agriculture, we must attach great importance to the safety and environmental friendliness of pesticides to ensure human health and the sustainable development of the ecological environment.
