EU Evaluates the Safety and Efficacy of Lactococcus lactis DSM 34262 as a Silage Additive for All Animal Species
On July 25, 2024, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) officially published its authoritative study, which was carefully prepared by the EU Animal Feed Additives and Products (FEEDAP) Research Group. Focus on the safety and efficacy evaluation of Lactococcus lactis DSM 34262, an innovative feed additive, in silage. This move not only responds to the high concern of the European Commission, but also triggered a wide range of discussions and expectations in the global animal husbandry field.
In-depth evaluation: Dual validation of safety and efficacy
After a thorough and rigorous scientific assessment, the research team came to an exciting conclusion. They note that under the proposed stringent conditions of use, Lacticoccus lactis DSM 34262 as an additive to silage has demonstrated an extremely high safety profile for all animal species, whether livestock, poultry or other economic animals. This conclusion is based on the comprehensive investigation of the biological characteristics, genetic stability and potential environmental impacts of this strain.
In particular, it is worth mentioning the excellent performance of the additive in promoting the fermentation of fresh plant materials. The experimental data showed that when the concentration reached at least 1×108 colony forming units (CFU) per kg of fresh feed, Lactococcus lactis DSM 34262 could significantly improve the fermentation efficiency of silage and stabilize its dry matter content within the ideal range of 30-35%. In particular, the strain was not found to carry any worrying resistance genes during the study, which provides a solid security guarantee for its wide application in the field of feed additives.
