EU Evaluates Safety and Efficacy of Lactic Acid Bacteria DSM 34345 as a Silage Additive for All Animal Species

On August 1, 2024, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) announced an important scientific opinion, carefully prepared by the EU Animal Feed Additives and Products (FEEDAP) Research Group and in strict compliance with the European Commission Directive. The team evaluated the safety and efficacy of Loigolactobacillus coryniformis DSM 34345 as an additive for a wide range of animal silage applications.

After thorough and careful consideration, the expert panel unanimously confirmed that the additive not only demonstrated a high level of safety for all animal species under the preset application scenario, but also ensured that the health of consumers was not affected and that it was not harmful to the environment. In particular, the strain also demonstrated the ability to significantly optimize the silage process for all fresh plant material, with a minimum effective use concentration of 1 × 108 colony-forming units per kilogram of fresh plant material.

However, the panel was careful to note potential risk factors: the additive, which contains Loigolactobacillus coryniformis DSM 34345, may trigger skin and respiratory allergic reactions in certain circumstances. Therefore, the research team strongly recommends that when using this additive, the relevant safe operating procedures must be strictly followed to ensure the safety of the operator and the surrounding environment. In addition, due to technical limitations, the Panel is not currently in a position to conduct a full assessment of the irritability of other manufactured products.

EFSA has officially concluded that Loigolactobacillus coryniformis DSM 34345 has demonstrated excellent safety and efficacy as an additive to silage. This discovery has undoubtedly brought a revolutionary feed preservation technology to the livestock industry, which is expected to greatly promote the progress and development of the industry in the future.
