TotalEnergies Corbion Signs Agreement with Nagase to Distribute Bioplastics in Japan

TotalEnergies Corbion (TEC), a global leader in the marketing, sales and production of polylactic acid (PLA), has signed an agreement with Nagase & Co to distribute Luminy brand PLA bioplastics in Japan. While it is not clear whether TEC's distribution rights for Luminy brand PLA bioplastics in Japan are limited to Nagase & Co, the use of environmentally friendly bioplastics will help Japan increase the use of degradable raw materials and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, thereby achieving its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

Under the cooperation agreement, Nagase Industries plans to expand sales of Luminy PLA in the Japanese market, ultimately reducing carbon emissions and minimizing waste. At the 26th Conference on Partnership for the Co-operation of the Parties (COP26) held in Glasgow, UK in 2021, Japan pledged to adopt new technologies to reduce carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Tokyo is currently using coal as a fossil fuel to generate electricity, and the country has pledged to gradually reduce electricity consumption in stages. Wider distribution of Luminy PLA is expected to lead to less waste and a corresponding reduction in emissions for plastic packaging film manufacturers.

In addition to expanding sales of Luminy PLA in the Japanese market, Nagase and TEC will collaborate on R&D to evaluate and enhance material performance and develop new applications that meet customer needs. Through this strategic collaboration, the two companies aim to reduce environmental impact by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a world with a sustainable, circular and regenerative economy.
