Huntsman's Rotterdam MDI Plant Hit by Force Majeure, 470,000 Tons of Annual Capacity Severely Impaired!
Huntsman Corporation, a leader in the chemical industry in the United States, announced on August 6 that in view of the force majeure event on the supply of methyl diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) at its plant in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the company has decided to impose a force majeure declaration on the production of MDI and its derivative products at the plant. The next day, the company disclosed the details to OPIS (a unit of Dow Jones & Company) : "From the 5th of this month, Huntsman Rotterdam will officially apply force majeure measures to MDI and its related product lines." This information was officially confirmed by the company's official spokesperson.
According to Huntsman, the root cause of the force majeure event is that "some of the partner companies in the Rotterdam cluster have also declared force majeure, which has caused unforeseen operational challenges... Currently, MDI production facilities are operating at below normal capacity." As for the specific duration of the force majeure factor, it is not possible to give an exact estimate at present.
According to industry data provided by OPIS, Huntsman has two MDI production units at its facility near Rotterdam with a combined annual capacity of up to 470,000 tonnes.
