Eli Lilly Opens $700 Million Nucleic Acid Drug R&D Center in Boston, Expanding its GatewayLabs Network
Eli Lilly and Company unveiled its $700 million Seaport Innovation Center in Boston, marking a significant increase in the pharmaceutical giant's commitment to nucleic acid drug discovery. The 346,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility is housed in a 12-story building owned by Alexandria Real Estate and is expected to house approximately 500 scientists and researchers.
The creation of the Harbor Innovation Center is a key step in Lilly's deepening RNA therapy strategy, which builds on the acquisition and rapid expansion of Prevaly Therapeutics, a gene therapy pioneer in New York City, in 2020. The opening of the new facility will strengthen Lilly's strength in RNA and DNA research and marks the first time the company has expanded its GatewayLabs, a biotech incubator and accelerator space, to the East Coast.
The Seaport Innovation Center will provide space for Lilly's GatewayLabs to create a collaborative environment for startups to advance their technology. The Boston site will initially provide space for four biotech companies: Amplitude Therapeutics, which focuses on RNA, and Tevard Biosciences; FireCyte Therapeutics, which works on neuroinflammation; and SoluTherapeutics, which combines antibodies with small bi-functional molecules.
Since its founding in San Francisco in 2019, Lilly's GatewayLabs program has achieved significant success in driving innovation and attracting promising startups. The program has hosted more than 20 biotech companies, and Lilly has invested directly in more than 70 percent of them. The expansion to Boston further solidifies Lilly's leadership in the field of genetic medicine.
The opening of the Harbour Innovation Centre coincides with a dramatic increase in the pharmaceutical industry's interest in nucleic acid-based therapies. Lilly's rival Novo Nordisk also recently opened its own research center in suburban Boston to focus on gene therapies for diabetes and obesity. This wave of new investment in genetic medical research shows how the competition among pharmaceutical giants is becoming increasingly fierce.
