1696 Bees Hanging by a Thread, 1 Confirmed Case of Varroa Mite Disease, Australian Agricultural Alert Sounded!

According to an update from the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), on 27 August 2024, the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment reported an outbreak of Varrosis in bees to WOAH. The outbreak occurred in Mildilla, Victoria, Australia, and the confirmed date of the outbreak was August 14, 2024. After investigation, the source of the outbreak was determined to be legitimate animal activity.

After detailed laboratory testing, 1,696 bees were found to be suspected to be infected, of which one bee was confirmed as ill. Varcosis is a serious bee disease that can have a serious impact on bee health and colony productivity.

At present, the outbreak is under control and has ended. Australia's Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment said they would not be submitting any further reports on the outbreak.
