FoodTalks recently announced the top 30 global edible probiotic raw material companies in 2021. This time the list selected the top 30 edible probiotic raw materials through information collection and comparison of more than 300 companies at home and abroad. This time, the top 30 edible probiotic raw materials are ranked based on comprehensive consideration of the turnover, scale, scientific research, brand recognition, and degree of globalization of the company's edible probiotic raw material supply.

1. Summary of the list

According to data from the China Health Care Association, in the probiotic market, most of the probiotic raw materials are used in food and beverage related, of which 78% are used in the dairy industry and 5.5% are used in the field of health products, accounting for a total of 83.5%. This list only counts the B2B probiotic raw material business used by companies in the food and beverage field.

Among the companies on this list, Danish Hansen, DuPont of the United States and Raman of Canada occupy the top three positions on the list. At present, some industry giants continue to strengthen their probiotic market position through acquisitions or cooperation. Among them, in 2021, IFF completed the merger with DuPont Nutrition and Biotechnology. Hansen acquired HSO Health Care GmbH, an Austrian probiotic raw material company, in April 2020, and then UAS Labs, a US probiotic raw material supplier, in June 2020.

Because probiotics have harsher onset conditions, higher requirements are put forward on the processes of R&D, production and practical application, which is an industry with relatively high technical barriers. China's probiotics industry started late. The development started in the 1990s, and it lags behind Europe, Japan and other regions for about 15-30 years. Therefore, in the past domestic and foreign reports, the number of Chinese companies is relatively small. In recent years, Chinese companies have increased their investment in the scientific research of probiotic raw materials. Therefore, the proportion of Chinese companies on the list has increased (50%).

Second, the basis for making the list

The 2021 global top 30 probiotic raw materials list comprehensively considers the turnover, scale, scientific research, brand recognition, and degree of globalization of the company's probiotic raw materials. Regarding the product standards of probiotic raw materials, we refer to the "List of Bacteria Can be Used in Food", "List of Probiotic Bacteria Can be Used in Health Food", and "List of Bacteria Can be Used in Food for Infants and Young Children" issued by the General Office of the Ministry of Health. 》; U.S. food industry bacteria regulations and standards; European safety qualification certification (QPS) and other documents.

To ensure the comprehensiveness of the ranking companies, we surveyed more than 300 companies based on the reference sources listed below. At the same time, in order to facilitate everyone's understanding of the basis and data sources of this time, the following is specially explained:

a) The performance of listed companies We only count the relevant parts of the business, (that is, the operating income related to probiotic raw materials that are only used in the food and beverage field). The data source refers to the latest annual report of the company.

b) Based on the first principle, in the annual report of listed companies, we only adopt the performance applied to the food and beverage part; for the insufficient breakdown of performance data in some listed annual reports, we contact the company and ask for internal data for reference. If there is no segmented performance data, we will rank according to their company size, scientific research capabilities, brand recognition and degree of globalization. In addition, in the enterprise B2B business, if the probiotic raw materials are used in the food and beverage industry, then we will judge it as a food-related business; if not, we will exclude this data.

c) Since most of the unlisted companies have not announced their turnover and specific revenue composition, they usually estimate their performance by default based on the proportion of products, combined with known output, number of patents and other dimensions of data for comprehensive consideration. If there are other non-related categories of business in the main business, which may occupy 3/4 or more and are not well-known businesses (subjective judgment), the company will not be added to this ranking.

d) The companies on the list are all companies that have B2B business of probiotic raw materials. If there are self-developed strains but no B2B business, the company will not join this ranking.
