May China Soda Ash Market Weakly Adjusted Downward
May 31 News:
I. Price Trends
According to Spotcom data, the price of soda ash fell in May. At the beginning of the month, the average market price of light soda ash was 1222 CNY/ton, and by the end of the month, it was around 1196 CNY/ton. The price decreased by 26 CNY/ton within the month, a price decrease of 2.13%.
II. Market Analysis
According to SpotCom data, the soda ash market trend in May showed a weak downward adjustment. On the supply side, although there was a concentration of soda ash plant maintenance in May, leading to a significant decline in operating rates, the continuous release of low-cost natural soda ash capacity from Yuanxing Energy Alashan and others offset the reduction in supply due to maintenance. The total market output remained at a historical high, with supply pressure still present. From the demand perspective, multiple production lines in the glass industry were either under cold repair or shut down, with companies mainly consuming inventory, resulting in limited purchases of soda ash. The fundamental situation of soda ash presented a pattern of strong supply and weak demand, putting downward pressure on prices, and the soda ash market operated at low levels during the month.
As of May 31, 2026, the mainstream market price of light soda ash in East China is around 1,100-1,560 CNY/ton, a decrease of 50 CNY/ton month-over-month; in Central China, the mainstream price of light soda ash is around 1,050-1,200 CNY/ton, a decrease of 10 CNY/ton month-over-month; in North China, the mainstream price of light soda ash is around 1,220-1,300 CNY/ton, remaining stable compared to last month.
On the demand side: According to the commodity analysis system, glass prices saw a narrow upward adjustment this month. The average market price of glass rose from 13.15 yuan per square meter to 13.25 yuan per square meter, representing an overall price increase of 0.76%. During the month, the glass industry’s operating rate remained relatively low, with many production lines undergoing cold repairs. Enterprises mainly adopted a stance of maintaining prices, yet overall market inventories remained high, and supply continued to be relatively ample. Meanwhile, downstream demand remained weak, resulting in sluggish trading activity. Under the conditions of high supply and low demand, the upward movement in glass prices was constrained, leading to volatile market performance throughout the month.
Market Forecast: Currently, the spot price of soda ash remains generally stable but weak. As some units undergoing maintenance resume operations in the later period, the operating rate will increase somewhat, further intensifying inventory pressure in the market. Meanwhile, the downstream glass industry continues to experience slow consumption and low operating rates, providing insufficient support for soda ash prices. In the short term, the supply-demand imbalance—strong supply and weak demand—will likely persist, and the soda ash market is expected to continue its relatively weak and consolidating trend. Specific attention should be paid to how quickly market inventories are being depleted.
