FSANZ Approves Three Controversial GMO Food Applications, Baby Formula May Contain New Ingredients, Public Comment Period Countdown Begins!

Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) officially announced two important announcements on September 9, 2024. The first notice, No. 306-24, deals primarily with application number A1312. The purpose of this application is to obtain approval for the use of a new genetically modified E. coli BL21 in infant formula products to produce 2 '-fucosyl lactose (2' -FL). The addition of this ingredient aims to further enrich the nutritional content of infant formula products to meet the needs of infant growth and development.

The second notification is also No. 306-24, but relates to application No. A1310. The application is for the approval of MON94637, a genetically modified soybean strain with specific characteristics, for food production. The unique feature of this soybean strain is its ability to resist lepidoptera pests, which will help reduce the reliance on chemical pesticides in agricultural production, thereby improving food safety and sustainability.

In addition to the above two notices, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand issued a further notice No. 305-24 on 6 September 2024. The notice relates to application No. A1301, which seeks public comment on a triacylglycerol lipase as a processing aid. This lipase is produced by genetically modified Fife's yeast and is mainly used in the processing of bread and bakery products to improve the quality and taste of the products. Members of the public have until 6pm (Canberra time) on 18 October 2024 to submit their comments and suggestions through the official channels.
