Generic Drug Giant Confirms Challenge to Novo Nordisk's High-Priced Ozempic for Under $100 Per Month, $150 Billion Market May Face Major Change!

ECHEMI 2024-09-18

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders revealed in a public statement Tuesday that he has received confirmation from several major generic drug companies that they have the ability to offer a generic version of Novo Nordisk's new diabetes drug Ozempic for less than $100 a month. The news is significant because Novo Nordisk CEO Lars Jorgensen is scheduled to appear next week before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (HELP), which Sanders chairs. The main focus of the hearing will be on the high price of Novo Nordisk's high-profile diabetes drug Ozempic and weight loss drug Wegovy in the U.S. market.

In his statement, Sanders did not specify which generic drug companies he had spoken with. It is worth noting that Ozempic's patent does not expire in the United States until early 2023. Ozempic and Wegovy both contain the same active ingredient, and although Ozempic was originally intended to treat diabetes, it is also widely used off-label for weight loss. Both drugs belong to the GLP-1 class of drugs and are in great demand in the US market. Some market analysts predict that the market for weight-loss drugs could reach a staggering $150 billion by the early 2030s.

However, the high price of these drugs has drawn attention and criticism from lawmakers. According to Novo Nordisk's website, Ozempic is listed for $935.77 per month in the United States, while Wegovy is listed for a whopping $1,349.02 per month. Although most consumers will actually pay less than those list prices, the high cost of these drugs still puts a financial burden on many patients.
