Chinese E-Cigarette Giants: Controversy Over 6-Methylnicotine Research, Leading Companies Embroiled in Safety Controversy!

ECHEMI 2024-09-26

At a time when China's e-cigarette industry is surging, three leading companies - Hangsen International Group, Jinwei Biotechnology and Small International (stock code: 6969.HK), known as the "giant of e-cigarette manufacturing", have jointly announced an ambitious research and development plan to explore the possibility of nicotine analogues as a traditional nicotine replacement. This initiative not only marks a new breakthrough in technological innovation in the e-cigarette industry, but also triggered widespread concern from all walks of life about the safety and compliance of new chemical substances.

Among the many nicotine analogues, 6-methylnicotine stands out for its chemical structure similar to nicotine, and has been tested in some electronic cigarette products in the United States. However, like two sides of the coin, its potential for addiction and enhancement has alarmed regulators and the scientific community. Authorities such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) have issued warnings requiring manufacturers to conduct more in-depth and comprehensive safety assessments before marketing.

In an interview with Reuters on Wednesday, Eve Wang, executive director of Small International, a leading company in the industry, demonstrated a high degree of social responsibility and scientific spirit. She made it clear: "Small will never put consumers' health at risk, and any new product launch will be based on the solid results of scientific research." Ms. Eve further elaborated, "We have an interdisciplinary research group within us that is working day and night to explore the molecular mechanisms, metabolic pathways, and long-term effects of nicotine analogues on human health. We know that this process will take a long time, but we are willing to invest the time and resources to ensure that every step is taken in a steady and solid way."

Prof. Kang Yu, President of the Hangsen International Institute, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Nicotine Analogues: Opportunities and Challenges" at the Global Tobacco and Nicotine Forum 2024 (GTNF) recently held in Athens, Greece. He stressed: "In this era of change, we must not only see the infinite possibilities that nicotine analogues bring to the e-cigarette industry, but also clearly recognize the complexity and uncertainty behind it." Therefore, each new chemical must be rigorously screened, evaluated and tested with unprecedented care." Professor Kang also revealed that Hangsen International has established a number of collaborative research networks around the world, aiming to gather global wisdom and jointly solve this technical problem.

Ms. Hayley Xu, global communications director of Jinwei Biotechnology, also said that the company is actively responding to the call of the industry to increase investment in the research and development of nicotine analogues. "We know that consumer trust is a company's most valuable asset. Therefore, while pursuing technological innovation, we pay more attention to product safety and compliance. We are committed to the development and promotion of any new products in accordance with the strictest scientific standards and laws and regulations."

The active exploration of China's three major e-cigarette companies in the field of nicotine analogue research and development not only shows the enterprises' unremitting pursuit of technological innovation, but also highlights the industry's high degree of responsibility for consumer health. However, as Ms Wang says: "This is going to be a multi-year research process." In this process, we look forward to seeing more scientific research results emerge to provide strong support for the healthy development of the e-cigarette industry. At the same time, we also call on all sectors of society to give more attention and support, and jointly promote the e-cigarette industry to develop in a safer, healthy and sustainable direction.
