Neste and Tepsa Collaborate to Transform European Chemical Recycling Logistics: Targeting 1 Million Tons of Waste Plastics Processing Annually, Production Set for 2025!
On October 4, Neste, Finland's leading petrochemical company, announced a partnership with Tepsa of the Netherlands to strengthen the infrastructure of chemical recycling logistics in Europe. Through this partnership, Neste will establish a base in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, dedicated to the storage and treatment of liquefied plastic waste, significantly increasing its chemical recycling capabilities. At the heart of the partnership is the deployment of advanced polymerization tanks, demonstrating Neste's commitment to expanding the scale of liquefied waste plastic processing and promoting the development of a circular economy.
Following the successful completion of industrial-grade processing trials, Neste is actively preparing to introduce large-scale liquefied waste plastic as a production feedstock at the Porvoo Refinery in Finland and convert it into Neste RE™, a high-quality recycled direct feedstock designed for the production of new plastics and chemicals.
To ensure the efficient operation of the supply chain and smooth logistics processes, the aggregation tank will be deployed in the Port of Rotterdam, a location chosen to optimize resource allocation and reduce logistics costs. As Neste has built a diversified supply system for liquefied waste plastics across Europe, this central logistics hub will be a key node connecting infrastructure across the continent, ensuring a seamless flow of supplies.
In addition, Neste uses industry-leading tank solutions and surrounding facilities to ensure the safe and reliable storage of liquefied waste plastics. The preparation and installation of the storage tank have been carefully planned, fully demonstrating the tireless pursuit of safety standards and excellent quality of both companies. The tanks are expected to become operational in the second half of 2025, in line with the construction progress of the Porvoo Refinery liquefaction waste plastic capacity upgrade project.
Neste will continue to deepen its footprint in the field of chemical recycling of plastic waste and has set an ambitious goal of processing more than 1 million tons per year. To achieve this goal, the company is actively building an upgraded capacity facility for liquefied waste plastics with an annual processing capacity of 150,000 tons. Through the use of diverse raw materials, including liquefied waste plastics and liquefied waste rubber tires, and relying on advanced refining technologies, Neste is committed to converting these wastes into high-quality direct feedstocks to support the production of new plastics, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of the circular economy.
