Piramal to invest $80 million to expand US sterile injectables plant
US contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) Piramal Pharma Solutions (PPS), part of India-based Piramal Pharma, plans to invest $80 million to expand its Lexington, Kentucky facility.
The facility specializes in aseptic compounding, liquid filling, and lyophilization of sterile injectable drugs.
Piramal plans to add 24,000 square feet of manufacturing space, a laboratory, a filling line, two lyophilizers, a capping machine, and an external vial washer. Upon completion in the first quarter of 2027, the Lexington facility will increase capacity from the current 104 batches per year to more than 240 batches per year.
Nandini Piramal, Chairman of Piramal Pharma, said: "This expansion is a strategic investment in the future of Piramal Pharma. Filling the commercial manufacturing gap enables the Lexington site to enter the rapidly expanding injectables market and establish its key position in this segment."
Peter DeYoung, CEO of Piramal Global Pharma, said: "The injectables market has grown steadily in recent years and is currently undersupplied. We are committed to adapting to this growing demand. This expansion will significantly increase the capacity and capabilities of our Lexington site, making Piramal Pharma a comprehensive partner throughout the product lifecycle and enabling us to provide therapeutic solutions to more patients."
According to Piramal, after the expansion, many customers have already committed to commercialize their products at the Lexington site.
