On November 1, the Dow Jones Indices Company officially announced that Nvidia Corporation and international coatings giant Sherwin-Williams Company (Sherwin-Williams) were included in the Dow Jones Industrial Average (hereinafter referred to as the "Dow"). The change will become effective before the market opens on Friday, November 8. According to a Dow Jones announcement, Nvidia will replace Intel, while Sherwin-Williams will replace Dow. The index adjustment is aimed at improving the representation of the semiconductor and materials industries.
Founded in 1866 and headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, Sherwin-Williams is one of the world's largest coatings companies. The company has three business units: Paint Shop Group, Consumer Brand Group, High performance Coatings Group, the business scope covers architectural coatings, wood coatings, packaging coatings, industrial heavy anti-corrosion and protective coatings, automotive coatings, coil coatings, Marine coatings, engineering machinery coatings and other fields, business in North America, South America, Europe and Asia Pacific and other more than 120 countries and regions. By the end of 2023, Sherwin-Williams had more than 65,000 employees worldwide.
According to the annual report of Sherwin-Williams, its sales revenue increased from $11.13 billion in 2014 to $23.052 billion in 2023, with an increase of 107.12% and a compound annual growth rate of 8.76% in the past ten years. According to the "Top 10 Global Coatings Manufacturers in 2024 list" released by the Paint Industry, Sherwin-Williams has topped the list for the fifth consecutive year.
According to the "Top 25 Global Coatings Listed Companies by Market Value in 2022" released by "Coating Industry", Sherwin-Williams once again ranked first with a total market value of $62.41 billion, and its market value exceeded the sum of the three giants PPG, Nippon and Akzonobel. The core purpose of the change is to ensure that the Dow Jones Index better reflects the current state of the market and remains representative. As a global leader in the coatings and materials industry, Sherwin-Williams' participation undoubtedly enhances the Dow's weight in the materials sector. In recent years, Sherwin-Williams has achieved solid growth through continuous technological innovation, sustainable development strategy and global market expansion. In the context of the recovery of the global construction industry, Sherwin-Williams' performance continues to rise, especially in the trend of growing demand for green buildings and environmentally friendly coatings.
Analysts believe that the adjustment not only reflects the recognition of Sherwin-Williams, but also reflects the promotion of the status of the material industry and the market's expectations for its future development. The adjustment of the Dow Jones Industrial Average is not only a technical change, but also an important signal of the future trend of the market. The inclusion of Nvidia and Sherwin-Williams means that the capital market has warmed up its investment confidence in the semiconductor and materials sectors. Especially in the context of the global economic recovery, the technology and basic materials industry is ushering in new development opportunities.
Since its launch on May 26, 1896, The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) has been an important indicator of the state of the U.S. stock market, the world's largest stock market. The index primarily measures a price-weighted index of 30 blue-chip U.S. companies, covering every industry except transportation and utilities.
Unlike the S&P 500, which has a "stock-capitalization weighting," the Dow uses a "price-weighting," which means that higher-priced stocks have a greater impact on the level of the index than lower-priced stocks. This system makes it difficult for highly priced stocks to be included in the Dow.
Currently, the index is maintained by the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board, and while there are no strict criteria for selecting its constituents, the editorial board generally focuses on stocks that are growing, large, reputable, representative of the industry, and favored by the majority of investors.
As one of the most important stock indexes in the world, Dow Jones Industrial Average has attracted the attention of many fund companies and issued related ETF products. There are 30 ETFs that track the index, according to Dow Jones. Domestic fund companies have also launched products such as the Penghua Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF. It can be expected that companies included in the index will attract more passive index fund buying.
Analysts pointed out that the inclusion of Nvidia and Sherwin-Williams in the Dow Jones Index fully demonstrates the importance of the technology and materials industry in the future economy. The market's focus on these two companies is likely to attract more capital into related industries and drive broader innovation and growth. However, while actively seizing opportunities, investors should also remain cautious and flexibly respond to market changes to reduce potential risks. With the continuous evolution of the global economy, the future market layout will be more complex and diversified, perhaps in the near future, there will be more industries and enterprises to get the corresponding attention.
