Citroniq Chemicals to Build World’s Largest Decarbonized Plastics Plant in Nebraska
Citroniq Chemicals, a leader in biochemical manufacturing, has selected Falls City, Nebraska, as the site for its groundbreaking bio-based production mega-facility. The project is a key component of Nebraska’s Bioeconomy Initiative, which aims to boost economic growth in the state, support rural communities, and create sustainable, high-paying jobs.
The plant will convert ethanol made from Nebraska corn into bio-based polypropylene, providing a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastics. In this way, Citroniq will not only reduce reliance on fossil fuels, but also boost the state’s agricultural sector, benefiting local farms and rural economies. The plant is expected to be operational in 2029.
Lucas Froeschl, Executive Director of Falls City EDGE, expressed his enthusiasm for the project: "Citroniq's commitment to integrating its operations into the Falls City community is a testament to their commitment to making a positive impact. We are excited to work with them to establish Falls City as a key player in Nebraska's growing bioeconomy."
The new facility will be a key contributor to Citroniq's vision of creating the world's largest decarbonization platform. The facility is expected to capture more than 7 million tons of CO2 annually while producing OrganicPP™, a bio-based polypropylene pellet for use in decarbonizing industries such as the automotive industry and other U.S. manufacturing. The company's strategy includes rapidly scaling operations with plans to build multiple plants, transform the U.S. plastics industry, and reduce the carbon footprint of U.S. polypropylene production by 20%.
CEO Kelly Knopp highlights the impact of Citroniq’s approach: “We are building a sustainable future by transforming Nebraska corn into a variety of durable, decarbonized plastic products. Our bioplastics manufacturing hub will create good-paying jobs in rural communities, support local economies, and advance environmental progress.”
Citroniq selected Nebraska because of the state’s strategic location, abundant ethanol feedstock, and strong logistics infrastructure, including easy rail access to industrial consumers of plastic products. The move aligns with the goals of Nebraska’s Bioeconomy Plan, which focuses on promoting sustainable practices, revitalizing rural areas, and leveraging the state’s agricultural assets for long-term economic growth.
