Trinseo Acquires Key Patent; Its Dissolution Recycling Technology Can Reduce CO2 Emissions by Up to 80%

On November 1, Trinseo announced that a patent application for its innovative solution-based polymer recycling technology has been officially approved by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in July 2024. This key achievement highlights Trinseo's strong commitment to driving a circular economy and reducing the environmental impact of plastic waste.

Traditional mechanical recycling methods have limitations in dealing with mixed and contaminated plastic waste, which limits the quality and quantity of recycled materials. Trinseo's dissolution technology addresses these challenges by selectively dissolving specific polymers to separate impurities such as dyes from complex waste mixtures, resulting in high-quality recycled materials for a variety of applications.

Dissolving recycling technology offers several advantages, enabling it to treat a wider range of plastic waste, including mixed and contaminated materials, thereby increasing recycling efficiency. The recycled polymer produced by this technique retains similar properties to the original material. The burden on the environment is significantly reduced by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and minimizing reliance on fossil raw materials. It is claimed that the technology can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80%. In addition, Trinseo further promotes the development of a circular economy by recycling valuable materials from the waste stream.

Trinseo's patented technology supports partners in the toy, consumer electronics and automotive industries as they move towards a circular economy and reduce their carbon footprint. In addition, the company operates a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) depolymerization facility in Rho, Italy. These initiatives highlight Trinseo's leadership in driving the circular economy transition.
