Samsung E&A acquires $215 million ethylene storage plant from Ras Laffan Petrochemical

ECHEMI 2024-11-18

Samsung E&A, a global provider of integrated solutions for the energy industry, announced that it has signed a contract with Qatar's Ras Laffan Petrochemical Company (RLP) for the Qatar RLP ethylene storage plant.

Samsung E&A intends to implement this project in a joint venture with Taiwan's CTCI. The total contract value of the project is approximately US$418 million, of which Samsung E&A's share is approximately US$215 million, and the contract period is expected to be 34 months.

The client Ras Laffan Petrochemical Company is a joint venture between Qatar Energy, the Qatari state-owned energy company, and a subsidiary of Chevron Phillips Chemical Company.

The scope of work for the project is to build an ethylene storage facility and utility infrastructure in the Ras Laffan Industrial Zone, 80 kilometers north of Doha, the capital of Qatar. The project is located in the same complex as the RLP ethylene project awarded to Samsung E&A in 2023 and is currently being implemented. Its purpose is to store ethylene during plant maintenance and repairs to ensure its availability in emergency situations.

Samsung E&A was responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of key equipment, including 30,000 metric ton tanks, compressors and pumps. Samsung E&A was awarded the project order for the ethylene storage facility, and was recognized for its excellent execution capabilities during the delivery of the RLP ethylene project.

Hong Nangong, President and CEO of Samsung E&A, said: "As we have secured a linked order with Ras Laffan Petrochemical Company, we will successfully carry out the project based on our performance experience and innovative strategies and strengthen our position in the Qatari market."
