You might wonder: Why not just use chelated iron? It’s true—chelated forms (like Fe-EDDHA) stay available longer in high-pH soils and are great for emergency fixes. But they don’t change the soil chemistry. Ferrous sulfate, while less persistent in very alkaline conditions, improves the growing environment itself—and it’s far more affordable, especially for large beds or food gardens.


Over time, consistent use of ferrous sulfate doesn’t just green up leaves—it builds resilience. Plants with solid iron levels develop stronger stems, deeper root systems, and better resistance to stress. And healthier plants mean more carbon captured, better pollinator support, and less need for synthetic inputs. In that sense, it fits neatly into sustainable gardening: simple, effective, and earth-friendly.


So if your garden’s looking a little washed-out, or you’re planting blueberries in clay-heavy soil, don’t overlook this old-school remedy.
