FDA VQIP Update: 15-Day Accelerated Clearance
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced updates to the Voluntary Qualified Importer Program (VQIP) and the implementation of an extension plan. This program aims to expedite the food import clearance process for participants adhering to stringent safety standards throughout the supply chain. VQIP is a voluntary program that allows approved importers to enjoy accelerated inspections and a smoother product import process. The updated program provides participating importers with greater operational flexibility and streamlined processes.
The FDA's execution process for the Voluntary Qualified Importer Program (VQIP) is as follows:
- The FDA will review applications and supporting documents to assess whether they meet VQIP requirements.
- Once approved, the FDA may conduct a VQIP inspection to ensure products comply with food safety system requirements.
- For juice or seafood importers subject to both VQIP and the Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP)/Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) management, the FDA may conduct inspections to confirm compliance with corresponding regulatory requirements.
- The FDA may require food labeling to identify any labeling violations and ask applicants to correct any identified defects.
To assist participants in obtaining facility certification from certified third-party producers under the TPP certification program, the FDA has extended the deadline for submitting applications and participation notifications.
