South Korea Updates Food Expiration Reference Values: 109 New Food Types Added
On December 13, 2024, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) in South Korea released its latest announcement regarding food expiration reference values.
Since 2022, the MFDS has publicly shared expiration reference values for 104 food types, covering 884 products. In this announcement, 109 new food types and 275 product expiration reference values were added, including products like mint gum and ketchup. Some food expiration dates have been adjusted; for instance, the expiration date for mint gum has been extended from 365 days to 664 days, and ketchup's shelf life has been extended from 6 months to 8 months to 345 days.
To further support the development of the food industry, the MFDS plans to gradually conduct expiration setting experiments for over 200 food types between 2022 and 2025, providing corresponding reference values. So far, a total of 150 food types and 1,159 product reference values have been published.
