Neste Launches Co-Processed Renewable Feedstock for Polymer and Chemicals Industries

ECHEMI 2025-01-02

Neste has expanded its product range for the polymer and chemicals industries with the launch of co-processed renewable feedstocks under its well-known brand Neste RE. By co-processing renewable raw materials, such as waste cooking oil, and fossil crude oil at its conventional refinery in Porvoo, Finland, Neste is able to produce a complementary Neste RE, a direct feedstock for the production of plastics and chemicals. Replacing fossil crude oil with renewable feedstocks reduces the carbon footprint of the feedstock compared to conventional fossil feedstocks used in the chemical industry.

A mass balance approach will be used to attribute the renewable feedstocks used in the process and the associated sustainability benefits to the Neste product, which contains pure hydrocarbons that can replace fossil feedstocks such as naphtha or propane in the manufacture of plastics and chemicals.

Jeroen Verhoeven, Commercial Director for Neste Polymers and Chemicals, explains: "Our goal is simple: to reduce the use of fossil raw materials in the chemical industry. With the co-processing of renewable raw materials, we are expanding our service offering to the chemical industry. At the same time, this marks another step in the gradual transformation of our crude oil refinery in Porvoo into a refining hub for renewable and circular solutions."

With the co-processing of renewable raw materials, Neste is launching a third route to produce Neste RE, complementing the company's production from 100% renewable raw materials in its renewable energy refinery based on the proprietary NEXBTL technology, as well as the production of circular raw materials such as hard-to-recycle plastic waste through chemical recycling.

With this new co-processed Neste RE feedstock for the polymer and chemicals industry, Neste is leveraging the experience gained in co-processing renewable raw materials into marine fuels and heating liquids.
