The Body Shop Ends Operations in Brazil
The British cosmetics brand announced the closure of all its operations in Brazil in an Instagram post published on January 2, 2025.
The Body Shop said: "Today's message is a farewell. We are moved and grateful to end this wonderful decade with you in Brazil. Together we have created an impactful story: we are against animal testing, we celebrate diversity, empowerment and the love of beauty in all its forms. Each of these achievements is possible without your support, who share our values and goals."
The decision is apparently part of the brand's global divestment. Throughout 2024, The Body Shop closed several subsidiaries, including those in the United States, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Founded in 1976 in Brighton, southern England by Anita and Gordon Roddick, The Body Shop has gained worldwide recognition for its ethical values and focus on sustainable practices. The company was acquired by L'Oréal in 2006 and then by Brazilian beauty giant Natura in 2017. The latter sold it in November 2023 to the Aurelius Fund, which declared the parent company bankrupt shortly afterwards. Finally, in June 2024, the brand was acquired by Auréa Holding, an investment fund founded by British businessman Mike Jatania. It is said to have returned to profitability after a rigorous restructuring.
After the sale to Aurelius was completed, Natura retained the distribution rights of the brand in Brazil under a master franchise agreement, which expired in December 2024 and was not renewed.
