Chemours Launches Strategic Review of European Materials Business Amidst Declining Demand

ECHEMI 2025-02-21

On February 18, 2025, Chemours announced a strategic review of its Advanced Performance Materials (APM) business in Europe following the release of its 2024 financial results. This decision comes in response to a 5% decline in net sales, totaling $5.8 billion, primarily driven by a 4% drop in prices and changes in its investment portfolio.

The APM division, which provides products such as fluoropolymers, fluororubbers, and membranes, operates production facilities in Belgium and France. CEO Denise Dignam revealed that Chemours has written down some APM assets and postponed plans to expand Nafion ion exchange material production, crucial for hydrogen generation, due to lower-than-expected market demand projected until 2030.

In addition, Chemours will exit its Surface Protection Solutions (SPS) Capstone business, citing regulatory changes that have decreased demand. Production is set to conclude by the end of Q2 2025, pending local regulatory approvals.

Chemours continues to lead in sectors like thermal and specialty solutions, titanium technologies, and advanced performance materials, providing tailored solutions across various industries, including coatings, plastics, and electronics.

The company’s focus on strategic adjustments reflects its commitment to adapt to market changes while striving to maintain a competitive edge in the evolving materials landscape.
