AkzoNobel has unveiled an innovative water-based wood coating that contains 20% bio-based ingredients, marking a significant step toward enhancing the use of renewable raw materials without compromising performance. This new product, known as RUBBOL WF 3350, is a sprayable, opaque coating launched by the company’s new wood coatings division.

The development of RUBBOL WF 3350 showcases AkzoNobel's commitment to sustainable innovation, providing customers with high-quality and durable products. Tessa Slagter, the company's Sustainable Innovation Manager, emphasized that utilizing bio-based raw materials not only helps reduce environmental impact but also paves the way for a more circular economy in the wood coatings industry. This initiative supports clients as they embark on their own sustainability journeys.

Jim Cavanagh, Director of Industrial Coatings at AkzoNobel, added that the new product matches the performance of other high-quality coatings, maintaining aesthetic appeal and value even under the harshest weather conditions. This advancement signifies a leap forward in coating technology and aligns perfectly with the company's dedication to sustainable innovation.

Developed and produced at the company's facility in Malmö, Sweden, RUBBOL WF 3350 is suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. It is backed by an extended warranty program, instilling confidence in end-users regarding its longevity and performance, thereby promoting the broader use of wood as a key material in architectural design.

The bio-based content of this product has been verified through external Carbon-14 testing, adhering to international standards set by the ASTM D6866, Method B. The bio-based components utilized are derived from renewable plant materials.

Beyond wood coatings, AkzoNobel is actively working to integrate bio-based ingredients across its product range. For instance, the company has supplied bio-based coatings for the interior of Kia's EV9 electric SUV. In China, the Dulux Anno series has introduced an innovative wall paint known as the Angel Version, which enhances indoor air quality and contains 48% bio-based ingredients.
