Trump Ends Oil Extraction Agreement with Venezuela Impacting Global Markets
President Donald Trump recently announced the termination of the oil extraction agreement between the United States and Venezuela, effective March 1. In a statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump cited Venezuela's failure to meet the terms of the agreement as the primary reason for this withdrawal, which involves concessions made in the oil extraction deal reached between the Biden administration and Nicolás Maduro's government on November 26, 2022.
Previously, the U.S. Treasury had eased sanctions on Venezuela, allowing Chevron and its subsidiaries to extract Venezuelan oil and export it to the United States. According to the Treasury's licensing regulations, the responsibility for oil extraction and related exports and sales lies solely with Chevron. Trump emphasized that the decision to scrap the agreement was not only due to Venezuela's failure to comply with the oil extraction deal but also because the country did not fulfill its obligation to return "immigrants sent to the U.S. from Caracas."
This decision marks a significant shift in U.S. policy toward Venezuela and could have profound implications for oil extraction cooperation between the two nations as well as the broader regional situation. The cancellation of the oil extraction agreement is expected to further increase economic pressure on Venezuela and contribute to uncertainty in the global energy markets.
