Canada Unveils $155 Billion Tariff Response to Unjustified U.S. Measures

ECHEMI 2025-03-05

In a decisive move, the Canadian government has announced a comprehensive tariff package in response to what it deems unjustified U.S. tariffs. On March 4, 2025, Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly revealed plans for a 25% tariff on $155 billion worth of U.S. imported goods, with an immediate focus on a first list valued at $30 billion.

The measures come as a direct response to the U.S. tariffs, which Canada views as unwarranted. The initial list of goods subject to tariffs includes items such as orange juice, peanut butter, wine, beer, appliances, and motorcycles. If the U.S. maintains its tariffs, Canada is prepared to expand its countermeasures to cover the full $155 billion.

Minister LeBlanc emphasized that Canada cannot stand idle while facing these unreasonable tariffs, stating, "This was not the outcome Canada hoped for – but we must respond to protect our economy and Canadian jobs." The government has also set up a remission process to help mitigate the impact of these tariffs on Canadian businesses and workers.

The ongoing trade tensions pose risks not only to Canadian jobs but also to the U.S. economy, with economists warning that American consumers could face higher prices as a result. The Canadian government is committed to advocating for the removal of these tariffs, as they threaten a historically strong trade relationship between the two countries.
