Major Leadership Changes at Novartis as Key Executives Shift Roles

ECHEMI 2025-03-05

On March 3, 2025, Novartis announced significant leadership appointments within its China operations. Li Yao, President of Novartis China, revealed that Tian Yu, the current head of Immunotherapy at Novartis China, will be promoted to President of Novartis Poland. Meanwhile, Wang Jia, who oversees the Ophthalmology, Transplant, and Central Nervous System (CNS) divisions in China, will take over the Immunotherapy business. Both appointments are effective from April 1, 2025.

Tian Yu is recognized as a benchmark figure in the pharmaceutical industry. With a background in mathematics from Peking University and a PhD in Biostatistics from Yale University, her career reflects a blend of strategic insight and analytical prowess. She joined Novartis Oncology in 2015 and has held various leadership roles, successfully spearheading the commercialization of multiple oncology products. After a brief stint at Merck, she returned to Novartis in 2022, where she significantly boosted the company's position in the immunotherapy market.

In her new role in Poland, Tian follows in the footsteps of Zhang Ying, who served as Novartis Poland President in 2015. This transition underscores the international competitiveness of Chinese pharmaceutical talent.

Wang Jia, stepping into the Immunotherapy leadership position, has been with Novartis since 2003 and has navigated various therapeutic areas, including Hepatitis, Immunology, and Transplant. His recent work in integrating the Ophthalmology and CNS sectors demonstrates his ability to drive cross-functional collaboration. As he leads a team of 2,000 in the Immunotherapy domain, he faces the dual challenge of sustaining growth in a competitive market while advancing Novartis’s new pipeline products.

These leadership changes at Novartis China reflect a strategic focus on innovation and market responsiveness. As both executives transition into their new roles, the industry will be keenly watching how they navigate the evolving landscape of pharmaceutical development and commercialization in their respective markets.
