Evonik Launches Innovative Purocel Products to Enhance Pyrolysis Oil Quality
Evonik has recently unveiled a comprehensive suite of Purocel™ products and catalyst technologies aimed at improving the quality of pyrolysis oil, thus promoting the circular economy in plastics. This offering includes cutting-edge Purocel™ adsorbents (505, 510, and 515), hydrogenation catalysts, and a modular refining device known as Rocket.
Pyrolysis oil, derived from plastic waste, requires upgrading and purification before it can be used as feedstock in steam cracker units or refineries. Evonik's latest innovations effectively reduce the presence of chlorides, silica, TAN, and other contaminants, making the oil suitable for further processing.
Nirav Shah, Director of Evonik's Global Catalysts Business, highlighted the challenges of removing organic chlorides from plastic pyrolysis oil, stating, "Evonik is committed to continuous innovation to deliver responsive solutions." Meanwhile, Max Preisenberger, head of the Catalyst Business, expressed excitement about the new developments, emphasizing their potential to enhance sustainability in the refining and petrochemical sectors.
The Purocel™505 adsorbent boasts a chloride removal efficiency three times greater than traditional organic chloride adsorbents, applicable across various pyrolysis oil fractions. The Purocel™510 is a renewable option that enhances circularity, while Purocel™515 aids in refining both pyrolysis oil and gas.
Evonik's broader product range for pyrolysis oil includes hydrogenation catalysts such as Purocel®H100, H200, H300, and H400, which effectively eliminate metals and organic chlorides while reducing olefins and aromatics. These catalysts can be regenerated and reused, supporting sustainability efforts and cost savings.
The Rocket refining technology designed for pre-treating pyrolysis oil features a slide rail installation, integrating customized adsorbents with optimized fluid dynamics to boost purification performance. This modular system can be tailored to meet customer specifications.
Evonik's expanding portfolio of Purocel™ adsorbents and catalysts, along with its pyrolysis oil technologies, drives chemical recycling initiatives, converting plastic waste into valuable products. This not only diverts potential landfill waste but also enables the use of alternative feedstocks, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing sustainability.
