AkzoNobel Transforms Wastewater Residue into Eco-Friendly Coating Materials
On March 4, 2025, AkzoNobel announced a groundbreaking achievement at its Mauá plant in Brazil, where innovative technology has successfully converted industrial wastewater treatment residues into eco-friendly coating materials, realizing a true circular economy.
Located in the São Paulo industrial belt, the Mauá facility revealed that 30% of the total residues generated during the industrial wastewater treatment process are being reintegrated into production. These residues are utilized for manufacturing the Coral brand of paints, specifically the Pintura Piso series. This technological advancement not only prevents industrial waste from ending up in landfills but also significantly reduces the consumption of raw materials. It is estimated that this initiative will cut CO2 emissions by 272 tons in 2024, equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of 400 average passenger vehicles.
"This innovative practice marks a significant breakthrough in the field of circular economy," stated Wijnand Bruinsma, AkzoNobel's Global Sustainability Director. He emphasized that it provides critical support for the company's goal of achieving 100% circularity in its operations by 2030.
