Indonesia Announces Major Upgrade to Its Energy Strategy: Doubling Oil Refining Capacity to 1 Million Barrels Per Day
Indonesia has unveiled a major upgrade to its energy strategy, announcing plans to build multiple refineries across its archipelago with a combined capacity of 1 million barrels per day. The ambitious plan, revealed by Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, marks a significant increase in capacity from the previous single refinery capacity of 500,000 barrels per day, highlighting the country's determination to achieve energy self-sufficiency.
The decision came after a meeting between Minister Lahadalia and President Prabowo Subianto, reflecting Indonesia's growing urgency to reduce its reliance on imported crude oil and refined fuels. Currently, Indonesia imports about 1 million barrels of crude oil per day to meet domestic energy needs, and the government hopes to significantly reduce imports through this strategic infrastructure construction.
The new refineries will be located on multiple islands, including Kalimantan and Sulawesi, ensuring a more distributed and resilient energy supply across the Indonesian archipelago. This multi-site construction approach aims to strengthen regional energy security and stimulate economic development in these regions.
In addition to the refinery expansion, Indonesia also plans to build an oil storage facility with a capacity of 1 million barrels to enhance the country's energy reserves, provide a buffer against potential supply disruptions, and further strengthen the country's energy security posture.
The government's push to increase refining capacity is part of its broader strategy to strengthen onshore processing of Indonesia's abundant natural resources. Last week, the government announced plans to accelerate 21 natural resource processing projects with a total value of US$40 billion. The projects include coal gasification, oil storage expansion, and oil refining initiatives.
Minister Rahadalia highlighted the importance of these projects, noting that they are critical to Indonesia's long-term economic and energy security. The increase in domestic natural resource processing is expected to create jobs, promote local industry development, and generate significant revenue.
Indonesia's pursuit of energy independence comes at a time of increasing global energy uncertainty. The country's abundant natural resources, including oil, gas, and coal, provide a solid foundation for this ambitious strategy. By investing in refining and storage infrastructure, Indonesia aims to position itself as a key player in the regional energy market. This shows that the government is proactively addressing the country's energy challenges and has a clear vision for the future energy landscape.
