La Roche-Posay Recalls Effaclar Duo Over Benzene Contamination Risk

ECHEMI 2025-03-14

On March 12, La Roche-Posay announced a recall of all batches of its Effaclar Duo product in the United States due to the detection of trace amounts of benzene, a known carcinogen. The parent company, L'Oréal, took this precaution after concerns emerged regarding potential contamination.

Launched in 2014, Effaclar Duo is designed for consumers with oily, acne-prone skin. Its primary active ingredient is 5.5% benzoyl peroxide, a potent component commonly used in acne treatments, which is likely the source of the detected benzene.

In a statement, L'Oréal said, “In close coordination with the FDA, we have decided to withdraw the current formula of Effaclar Duo from retailers.” The company also indicated that an improved acne treatment formulation would be available soon. Reports from L'Oréal representatives noted that this recall is limited to the United States and Canada, as the product containing benzoyl peroxide is not sold in China.

Currently, La Roche-Posay offers a product set, the Effaclar “K乳+Duo+M水乳”, on its Tmall flagship store, priced at approximately 279 yuan. This set has already sold over 9,000 units. The K乳's main ingredients include salicylic acid, capryloyl salicylic acid, and vitamin E, while Duo+M乳 includes soothing components like niacinamide, which appear to differ from the recalled product's formulation.

La Roche-Posay, founded by a dermatologist, boasts a strong pharmaceutical background and is actively involved in the field of dermatological treatments. According to data from the Forward Industry Research Institute, the brand’s sales in China surpassed 200 million yuan in 2009, reaching 1.87 billion yuan by 2018, maintaining a steady market share of around 12% from 2014 to 2020.

In its 2024 financial report, L'Oréal's Dermatological Beauty Division achieved sales of €7.027 billion (approximately ¥53.241 billion), marking a 9.8% increase and breaking the €7 billion threshold for the first time. La Roche-Posay’s performance has notably outpaced CeraVe, making it the third-largest skincare brand globally.

However, the Northeast Asia market, including China, saw a decline in sales to €10.303 billion (around ¥78.061 billion) in 2024, a 3.2% decrease, making it the only region among the five major global markets to experience a downturn. This decline has been attributed to the negative growth in China's beauty market and increased competitive pressure in Hainan's tourism retail sector.

Some media reports suggest that La Roche-Posay's reputation as a "dermatological cosmetics" brand has been constrained by stringent regulations in the domestic skincare market. Nevertheless, the brand is actively adjusting its strategies for China, such as announcing table tennis player Sun Yingsha as its brand ambassador for skincare repair in early 2025.
