Rapidicil Launches New Era in Weed Control with Global Registration Progress

Recently, Sumitomo Chemical has accelerated the global registration process for its innovative herbicide, Rapidicil (active ingredient: Epyrifenacil). In the North American market, Valent has secured exclusive marketing and distribution rights for this promising product. According to the Product Development Manager at Valent USA, Rapidicil is expected to complete its registration in the United States by February 2026, while Canadian registration may require an additional several months to a year.

In 2023, Sumitomo Chemical successfully registered Rapidicil in Argentina, marking the official start of its global market expansion plan. The company aims to achieve an annual revenue target of 100 billion yen (approximately $1 billion) through its sales of no-till herbicides, including Rapidicil.

As a non-selective herbicide, Rapidicil demonstrates high efficacy against both grasses and broadleaf weeds. Its standout feature is its high translocation ability, allowing it to move swiftly within the plant, rather than solely relying on surface contact for effectiveness. This characteristic provides a significant advantage in no-till and reduced-tillage systems. Rapidicil will primarily be used for pre-plant weed burn-down treatments, effectively controlling various hard-to-manage weeds that have developed resistance.

The weed resistance issue has become increasingly severe in recent years, particularly in North America. In Saskatchewan and Alberta, Canada, certain weed species have shown varying degrees of resistance to multiple herbicide groups, including Group 9 (glyphosate), Group 2, Group 14 (PPO inhibitors), and Group 4. Research indicates that Rapidicil is highly effective against these resistant species. Field trials conducted by Valent in Kansas demonstrated that using Rapidicil alone led to over 90% control of resistant weeds within 14 days of application.

To maintain the long-term effectiveness of Rapidicil and slow the development of resistance, Valent plans to recommend mixing Rapidicil with herbicides that operate through different mechanisms, such as glyphosate, glufosinate, 2,4-D, or dicamba.

Sumitomo Chemical is optimistic about Rapidicil's market potential, with plans for a large-scale rollout in both North and South America for effective weed burn-down treatments. Additionally, the company has formed a strategic partnership with Bayer to develop next-generation integrated weed control solutions, combining Rapidicil with Bayer's upcoming PPO-inhibitor-resistant crop varieties.
