Wanhua Chemical Launches Complete Adipic Acid Supply Chain Reducing Dependency and Revolutionizing Animal Husbandry

ECHEMI 2025-03-21

Recently, Wanhua Chemical Group announced the official launch of its complete supply chain for Vitamin A (VA). This project has successfully overcome over 60 core patented technologies, including green catalytic processes, significantly reducing China's dependency on imported VA raw materials.

Vitamin A is a crucial fat-soluble vitamin essential for human health. Additionally, VA is a key additive in animal feed, enhancing breeding efficiency and improving livestock health indicators. Currently, 60% of global VA production capacity is controlled by foreign companies, making Wanhua Chemical's project a significant step in changing this landscape.

The integration of the VA supply chain is a complex system engineering task, with core technology breakthroughs being critical. The Wanhua Chemical VA project starts with isobutylene, going through key steps like citral synthesis and VA synthesis, ultimately achieving a technical closed loop for the entire supply chain. The project has also reduced the energy consumption per unit of VA by 20%, decreased wastewater discharge by 30%, and significantly lowered carbon emission intensity.

As an essential nutrient, the integration of the VA supply chain will have profound implications for improving national health standards. According to statistics from the Chinese Nutrition Society, VA products are monopolized by foreign giants, leading to price fluctuations influenced by production and transportation factors, which negatively impact the healthy development of the feed and breeding industries. Wanhua Chemical's project is expected to create a complete industrial cluster encompassing “VA raw materials—functional feed—smart breeding—cold chain logistics,” ensuring stable market supply and building a health guarantee system from production to consumption, directly benefiting both the animal husbandry sector and consumers.

“In the past, farmers faced high prices for imported VA, which raised feed costs. Now, with domestic VA substitutes available, feed manufacturers have a stable and reliable source of raw materials,” stated a representative from the Yantai Huangbohai New Area Agricultural and Marine Fisheries Bureau.
