Kuraray Acquires California Based Nelumbo Advancing PFAS Free Surface Technology
On April 2, 2025, Kuraray announced its acquisition of Nelumbo, a California-based company specializing in unique surface modification technologies. The purchase, conducted through Kuraray’s subsidiary Kuraray Holdings U.S.A., Inc., has its financial details undisclosed. Kuraray stated that the transaction will not significantly impact the company’s consolidated performance.
Founded in 2016, Nelumbo originated as a tech startup from the University of California, Berkeley. The company has focused on leveraging surface modification technologies for various substrates. In 2023, Kuraray and Nelumbo entered into an exclusive partnership, working to apply these technologies to fibers and polymers.
After extensive evaluation, Kuraray concluded that Nelumbo’s technology could enhance surface functionality, such as water resistance, without relying on PFAS or other tightly regulated chemicals.
This acquisition aligns with Kuraray’s PASSION 2026 mid-term plan, which emphasizes “innovation driven by networks” as a key growth initiative. By integrating Nelumbo’s expertise, Kuraray aims to expand its foundation in polymer and synthetic chemistry, offering new, sustainable solutions to the market.
In a related move, Kuraray announced on March 5 that it will cease production of Vecstar™ FCCL flexible copper-clad laminates by mid-2026. However, the company will focus on expanding applications for Vecstar™ liquid crystal polymer films, continuing production at its Saijo plant.
This acquisition reflects Kuraray’s commitment to sustainability and technological innovation, paving the way for greener, PFAS-free advancements.
