Wanhua Signs 70K HDI Acquisition in Europe Amid Market Shift
On April 10, 2025, Wanhua Chemical successfully acquired the specialty isocyanate business of France’s Vencorex, including its 70,000-ton HDI monomer production base near Grenoble. This acquisition marks a key milestone in Wanhua’s global strategy, strengthening its European presence and optimizing its international asset portfolio.
Vencorex, a leading global producer of aliphatic isocyanates, has facilities in France, the U.S., and Thailand. However, the company faced declining competitiveness due to the European energy crisis following the Russia-Ukraine conflict, leading to judicial restructuring.
Through this acquisition, Wanhua gains core HDI production facilities, Vencorex’s established sales channels in Europe, and its brand influence, further solidifying its leading market position. The deal also includes intellectual property rights, allowing Wanhua to fortify technical barriers, enhance global competitiveness, and prevent key technology leaks.
The acquisition brings multiple advantages:
- Reshaping Market Dynamics: By integrating Vencorex’s valuable assets, Wanhua strengthens its foothold in Europe, increases market share, and reduces competition, enhancing industry concentration.
- Boosting Operational Efficiency: The Grenoble site offers advanced production and storage capabilities, allowing Wanhua to shorten inventory turnaround times in Europe to just one month, improving supply chain flexibility.
- Mitigating Global Risks: The European base enables Wanhua to deliver low-tariff products to the U.S., countering high tariffs imposed by U.S. policies, while ensuring stable global operations.
This acquisition also reassures key international clients by securing a reliable supply of overseas products, enhancing client trust and cooperation.
Meanwhile, the polyurethane sector shows signs of improvement, with MDI and TDI demand expected to grow. Global MDI capacity expansion remains limited, while domestic furniture production and Europe’s infrastructure projects signal a recovery.
Key stocks to watch: Wanhua Chemical and Miracles Material.
Risks: Delayed project timelines, weaker-than-expected demand, policy changes, and energy price volatility.
