$500 Billion Trade War Escalates as China Files WTO Complaint Against Trump Tariffs
In a significant escalation of the ongoing trade conflict, China has lodged a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the United States, challenging President Donald Trump’s recent imposition of tariffs on Chinese goods.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce described the U.S. actions as “malicious,” asserting that the unilateral tariff increases violate WTO rules and undermine international trade norms. Beijing emphasized that these measures not only fail to address the underlying issues but also damage the normal economic and trade cooperation between the two nations.
In retaliation, China announced tariffs of 15% on U.S. coal and liquefied natural gas imports, and 10% on crude oil, farm equipment, and certain automobiles. Additionally, Beijing initiated investigations into U.S. tech giant Google and other American companies, adding them to a list of “unreliable entities.”
The WTO’s dispute settlement process allows for 60 days of consultations between the parties. If no resolution is reached, China can request adjudication by a panel of trade experts. However, the WTO’s appellate body remains non-functional due to the U.S. blocking the appointment of new judges, casting doubt on the effectiveness of this mechanism.
This latest development underscores the deepening rift between the world’s two largest economies, with potential ramifications for global trade and economic stability.
