101 Charging Stations Spark Urgency as Saudi Aramco and BYD Join Forces on EV Future

ECHEMI 2025-04-25

On April 21, Saudi Aramco announced a landmark agreement with China’s BYD to co-develop advanced technologies for electric vehicles. The deal, signed through Saudi Aramco Technologies Company (SATC), aims to enhance vehicle energy efficiency and reduce emissions, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s push for a greener transportation system.

Saudi Aramco, a global oil giant with immense R&D capabilities, is now pairing with BYD, a pioneer in electric vehicles and battery innovation. This alliance combines complementary strengths: cutting-edge automotive engineering from China and Saudi Arabia’s vast energy innovation platforms.

Racing against time, Saudi Arabia has pledged to raise electric vehicle adoption from 1% to 30% within five years, but with only 101 EV charging stations across the kingdom by the end of 2024, the gap between vision and reality is clear.

Ali A. Al-Meshari, Senior VP of Technology Oversight at Aramco, stated that the partnership is rooted in Aramco’s pursuit of next-generation powertrains and low-carbon fuels. He emphasized the importance of multi-path energy transitions, and highlighted SATC’s mission to drive this with BYD’s collaboration.

BYD’s Senior VP Luo Hongbin echoed the sentiment, saying the real breakthroughs lie in open innovation. The company believes this partnership will produce high-efficiency, low-carbon mobility solutions, helping tackle global climate goals through cross-border synergy.

Beyond EVs, Aramco has expanded investments in China, including stakes in firms like Sinopec, Rongsheng Petrochemical, Hengli Petrochemical, and Dongfang Shenghong, solidifying a strategy of deepened Sino-Saudi industrial collaboration.
