India’s OTC Drug Reform Targets 27 Medications to Curb Misuse

India’s top drug advisory board is poised to implement a significant overhaul of over-the-counter (OTC) medication sales, aiming to limit the availability of certain drugs to prevent misuse and ensure patient safety. The proposed framework restricts OTC sales to 27 medications, including common antipyretics and painkillers, with specific dosage and quantity limitations. 

This initiative marks a pivotal shift in India’s approach to OTC drug regulation, aligning with global standards observed in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. The move is designed to balance accessibility with safety, addressing concerns over the unregulated sale of medications that can lead to misuse.

The Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) has been instrumental in this process, forming a sub-committee to scrutinize the conditions determining a drug’s OTC status. The committee’s recommendations are expected to be submitted soon, paving the way for the finalization of the OTC drug list. 

By implementing these measures, India aims to enhance patient safety, reduce the risk of drug misuse, and ensure that essential medications remain accessible to those in need.
