Clariant Powers World’s Largest 42000 Ton Green Methanol Plant Launch with MegaMax Catalyst

ECHEMI 2025-04-27

On April 23, 2025, Clariant announced a major breakthrough as its MegaMax catalyst successfully powered the launch of European Energy’s e-methanol facility in Kassø, Denmark. This plant, now the largest commercial-scale e-methanol unit worldwide, boasts an impressive 42,000 tons of annual capacity, using bio-based CO₂ and green hydrogen.

Throughout the commissioning, Clariant’s Applied Catalyst Technology (ACT) team delivered critical on-site support, guiding catalyst loading, reduction, and plant startup. In the face of the particularly demanding CO₂-to-methanol conditions, MegaMax proved its outstanding activity and stability.

Georg Anfang, Clariant’s Global VP of Syngas and Fuels Catalysts, shared his enthusiasm: “This success marks a transformative moment for scaling green methanol production, and Clariant is proud to enable commercial sustainability today, not just tomorrow.

Anders Brendstrup, European Energy’s VP, emphasized, “Producing the world’s first batches of e-methanol is a monumental achievement after four years of intense development. Clariant’s catalyst and comprehensive technical support were vital to reaching this goal, and we look forward to future collaborations.

European Energy, a leader in renewable innovation since 2004, has heavily invested in solar, wind, Power-to-X, and carbon capture technologies, pushing the frontiers of fossil-free energy solutions.

MegaMax emerged as the catalyst of choice for this project, delivering exceptional selectivity and long catalyst life even under low temperature and pressure. Specifically optimized for pure CO₂ feedstocks, it ensures efficient transformation and reduces by-product formation, greatly enhancing the sustainability and economic viability of green methanol production.

Clariant’s contribution signals a major acceleration in the global energy transition journey.
