EFSA Proposes Expanded Use of 3-FL in Infant Foods Raises Maximum Intake Levels

On April 29, 2025, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued document 2025.9370, proposing to expand the use of 3-Fucosyllactose (3-FL) as a novel food in infant products and increase its maximum intake limits.

According to the proposal, 3-FL will now be permitted in infant foods, with the maximum allowable intake in natural nutrients and natural foods raised from 0.9 g/L and 12 g/L to 1.75 g/L. For special medical foods, the highest intake limit will also increase from 0.9 g/L or g/kg to 1.75 g/L or g/kg. Additionally, the maximum daily intake for general population foods, excluding infants, will rise from 3 g/day to 4 g/day.

The regulation will take effect upon official publication in the EU Official Journal, further broadening the application of 3-FL to meet growing demand in the health and nutrition sectors.
