Ascend Launches High Purity Acrylonitrile Production in Texas to Support $30 Billion Global Market
Ascend Performance Materials has officially commenced high-purity acrylonitrile production at its Chocolate Bayou plant in Alvin, Texas, following the successful installation and commissioning of new purification systems. This strategic upgrade marks a major milestone in the site’s 63-year history, significantly enhancing the plant’s capabilities in serving advanced industries.
Acrylonitrile, a key raw material in the production of polymers and synthetic rubber, sees rising demand from aerospace, renewable energy, and healthcare sectors where high-purity versions are critical. Ascend’s investment supports both technical innovation and domestic supply chain resilience, partly backed by a U.S. government contract to secure materials vital for nitrile glove production.
Alex Mihut, Vice President of Ascend’s high-performance chemicals division, highlighted the broader vision: “This development enables us to enter new end-use markets while reinforcing our role as a sustainable solutions provider.” The move underscores Ascend’s ambition to deliver cutting-edge materials aligned with the evolving needs of industry and society.
The Chocolate Bayou site is also gearing up to expand production to include acetonitrile, an essential solvent widely used in pharmaceutical manufacturing. This future-facing expansion will further position Ascend as a critical contributor to domestic and global chemical supply chains.
With global demand for acrylonitrile and its derivatives projected to exceed $30 billion by 2030, Ascend’s investment arrives at a pivotal moment. The company, headquartered in Houston and operating across North America, Europe, and Asia, continues to push the envelope in material science and sustainable manufacturing to help drive the next generation of clean energy, advanced healthcare, and high-performance consumer goods.
