Ozempic Weight Loss Injections Could Slash Cancer Risk by 41 Percent
On May 12, 2025, researchers revealed that Ozempic and other GLP-1 receptor agonists may reduce the risk of cancers linked to obesity by up to 41%, offering benefits beyond weight loss. Excess weight is the second leading cause of cancer in the UK, responsible for over 1 in 20 cases.
A study examined individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes who had no prior cancer diagnosis and were treated with GLP-1 receptor agonists. Over a follow-up period of 7.5 years, these drugs lowered the risk of cancers such as breast, bowel, pancreatic, and gallbladder cancer.
Experts suggest the anti-cancer effects may come from reduced inflammation and improved natural killer cell function, which helps the body destroy cancer cells. The findings highlight that these drugs provide metabolic and immune benefits that go beyond controlling appetite.
This breakthrough signals a new frontier in cancer prevention, but researchers stress the need for further studies to fully understand how these medications can be used in preventing and treating cancer.
