Australia and New Zealand Approve 2 Major Infant Formula Additives in Update 34025

ECHEMI 2025-05-22

On May 14, 2025, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) issued Notification 340-25, confirming the approval of two significant amendments to the Food Standards Code, with direct implications for infant formula manufacturers.

The update authorizes the use of milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) as a nutrient ingredient in infant formula, with a strict upper limit of 7.5 mg per 100 kJ, which is equivalent to 7 g per liter. MFGM is valued for its potential benefits to cognitive development and immune function in infants.

In addition, FSANZ approved 2’-fucosyllactose (2’-FL), a synthetic human milk oligosaccharide, for inclusion in infant formula. The maximum permitted level is 96 mg per 100 kJ, or 2.4 g per liter. 2’-FL has gained international recognition for its role in promoting gut health and enhancing infant immunity.

These approvals are effective immediately from the date of publication in the official gazette, marking a major advancement for infant nutrition products in Australia and New Zealand.
