In a move that could soon bring the vibrant power of microalgae to plant-based milks and fruit juices across Europe, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued a cautiously optimistic safety opinion on a novel food ingredient: algal meal from Haematococcus pluvialis containing astaxanthin (ATX). Known for its deep red pigment and potent antioxidant properties, this natural compound—long used in dietary supplements—may now expand into everyday foods, but with a clear caveat for young consumers.
Published on December 3, 2025, EFSA’s scientific assessment by its Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens (NDA) evaluates the safety of using this algal meal in dairy analogues, including plant-based beverage whiteners and fruit juices as defined under EU Directive 2001/112/EC. The ingredient, produced by homogenizing, crushing, and spray-drying cultivated H. pluvialis biomass, contains approximately 5% astaxanthin by weight—a carotenoid celebrated for its anti-inflammatory and cell-protective effects.
Astaxanthin is not new to human consumption; it occurs naturally in salmon, shrimp, and krill, giving them their pinkish hue. Since the 1990s, concentrated forms have been widely available in food supplements (FS) across Europe. But this application marks a strategic shift: moving astaxanthin from niche capsules into mainstream functional foods aimed at health-conscious consumers seeking clean-label, plant-based nutrition.
EFSA’s verdict? The novel food is safe for its proposed uses—under one critical condition.
The panel conducted a comprehensive intake assessment that combined background dietary exposure (from eating fish and shellfish), intended new uses (like oat milk or juice fortified with algal meal), and potential concurrent use of astaxanthin supplements. Here’s where caution kicks in: while adults’ total estimated intake remains at or below the established Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of 0.2 mg per kg of body weight, the picture changes for younger groups.
For children aged 3 years and older and adolescents, consuming both fortified foods and astaxanthin supplements on the same day would push total intake above the ADI—a threshold set to ensure lifelong safety, especially for developing bodies. Though no acute toxicity was identified, EFSA emphasizes that the ADI includes a wide safety margin, and exceeding it regularly is not advised.
Therefore, the panel concludes that the novel algal meal is safe for use in dairy alternatives and fruit juices—provided that children and adolescents do not consume astaxanthin-containing food supplements on the same day. This nuanced guidance reflects EFSA’s modern risk-assessment philosophy: enable innovation, but anchor it in real-world consumption patterns.
Notably, this isn’t EFSA’s first look at the ingredient; a prior evaluation in 2014 already confirmed its safety in supplements. The current opinion builds on that foundation, adapting to evolving food trends where functional ingredients migrate from pills to plates—and now, to plant-based lattes and smoothies.

For regulators, it sets a precedent for managing cumulative exposure to bioactive compounds across multiple product categories.
