25-Year Study Confirms AkzoNobel Resicoat Ensures Corrosion-Free Water Infrastructure
A groundbreaking 25-year study has demonstrated the exceptional performance of AkzoNobel’s Resicoat epoxy powder coating in protecting drinking water infrastructure from corrosion. Conducted by the German Water Supply Association of Upper County Bad Bentheim in collaboration with GSK, the test buried coated valves and fittings two meters underground under real-world conditions.
Upon excavation, the components showed no delamination, cracks, leaks, or corrosion, with the water system fully functional. The findings were independently verified by the Hanover Institute for Materials Testing (MPA Hannover).
The study provides rare, long-term field data confirming the reliability of epoxy powder coatings for drinking water systems. Yidong Meng, Global Segment Manager at AkzoNobel Powder Coatings, emphasized that epoxy coatings surpass traditional paints and enamels in corrosion protection, significantly reducing maintenance costs and extending service life.
Lars Walther, GSK Managing Director, called the results a milestone, offering irrefutable evidence of epoxy coatings' value in safeguarding water infrastructure.
The Resicoat R series, a thermoset epoxy powder coating, is designed for cast iron and steel valves and fittings in water and gas networks. Applied via fluidized bed or electrostatic spray, it delivers robust and long-lasting protection.
With participation from over ten companies, the study sets a new benchmark for coatings in critical infrastructure applications.
